Hii there,
Welcome to the second part of the Personal Development series. In the first part, I explained the “What,
Why and How” to go about personal development.
I also talked about the three most important questions to answer on your personal development
journey, as well as how to create a personal development plan (PDP). If you haven’t read that, please see here.
I mentioned in the previous article that I’ll be sharing more on the core areas of personal development,
so let’s dive right in!
Personal Development cuts across all aspects of human life, interaction, daily lifestyle and choices.
In other words, one could easily pick any aspect and choose to work at being better.
However, these three core areas can serve as a broad classification when it comes to personal development.
Physical:
This covers the body, brain, motor, sensory skills and physical health.
Cognitive/Physiological:
Social interactions, emotions, attitudes, personality, values etc, fall under this category.
Spirit:
This is the sum total of your belief system and relationship with God.
When it comes to upgrading yourself/life, virtually anything you can think of would fall into one of those
categories.
If you’re working hard towards being the best of yourself, always ensure that your personal
development plan affects the three core areas! Here’s an example of how;
Bola is a 23 year old graduate of Business Administration. She does a 9 – 5 at a reputable firm while
running a small scale catering business at her spare time.
It’s July already and Bola has no intention of ending the year without boasting of a “summer body”. She’s also looking to be at a multinational in no time, while making plans to establish her business and
also get married. She knows where she is at the moment and has worked out a Personal development plan to help herself.
Starting out the new month, Bola highlights the core areas and develops a plan that covers them. She
knows that she must develop herself spiritually, physically, mentally, financially and socially.
Spiritually
Bola understands that her walk with God is paramount, she believes the the foundation of her success and achieving her set goal is in Christ, and living out His purpose here on earth. She sets a goal to read at least 2 chapters of her Bible, and prays for 30 mins daily.
Physically
Remember Bola has got a summer body goal. Now she’s registered with a gym and would
be doing some 3hrs workout every Saturday.
Mentally
She’s made up her mind that she wants to be at a multinational by the end of the year, she
starts taking a free online course in her field, and does a minimum of 30 mins, 4 times in a week. She
also applies to a new firm, once every two weeks.
Financially
In order to establish her business, she definitely needs more funds. She decides to invest
a part of her salary for a few months, and uses the proceed to purchase an equipment that deliver more
products in less time.
Socially
Oh well, a good man wouldn’t be delivered at her doorstep. So Bola gets intentional about
being a better friend, now she’s caring, attending more events and interacting more in the office,
church, and at social gathering etc.
With all these in place, you can only imagine how much of a better person Bola would have become by
the end of the year.
Isn’t it interesting how she curated her plan in small bits that cut across the core areas without having to
choke herself? A little here and there daily/weekly and she’ll be where she wants to be. With commitment and discipline, Bola would definitely achieve her goals, so can you!
As I wrap this up, you should also know that personal development also involves dropping things. Becoming a better you Is a balance between picking up actions that help and dropping those that
wouldn’t.
Your Personal Development Plan should always contain actions/habits you need to drop on your journey to being the best version of yourself.
I know you’ve found this helpful, don’t keep to yourself. Kindly share!.
Cheers!
